Thomas Burberry was passionate about partnering with local craftspeople and manufacturers and appreciated British fabrics of the highest quality. In 1900, he began working with Johnstons of Elgin, a family-run business founded in 1797 in Elgin, Scotland. Since then, the brand has partnered with Johnstons to create its iconic scarves.
Woven on traditional looms at Johnstons’ Scottish mill, it takes dedicated craftspeople more than 30 steps to weave a single scarf.
To achieve the correct Burberry Check colour pattern, the yarns are placed in a precise sequence on the loom.
The fabric is then washed in natural spring water from the surrounding countryside and then carefully brushed with teasels to produce an ultra-soft finish. These techniques have been passed down through generations and many processes are still completed by hand.
The iconic Burberry Check cashmere scarf was introduced in the 1970s and has become one of our best-known accessories.
Our ReBurberry aftercare services help to extend the life of our cashmere scarves. Our Refresh service offers expert cleaning to restore the material's soft finish, while Upcycle allows customers to select custom embroidery and appliqués to repair damaged areas.
